La Belle Inspirations: An Artist’s Mixed Palette

Paintings by Carol Burnett

Goose Creek Studio will hold an opening reception for an exhibition of new work by local artist Carol Burnett entitled “La Belle Inspirations” on Sunday February 12 at 2:00-5:00 PM.

Burnett’s new exhibit celebrates the strength, sensuality and glamour of women.  Much of the work harkens to bygone eras - both domestic and high fashion.  The women of Burnett’s creative imagination reach across generations, races and economic status.  Yet, all these women share a dignity and beauty that captivates the viewer.  Burnett’s work is both whimsical and satirical.  These women are not just feminine heroines or pretty window dressing.  Burnett does what naïve painters or folk artists do so well, she captures the essence of a particular culture or social issue.  These women clearly shape their own lives and destiny within the context of their own milieus.  In many ways, these images can be considered a memoir of Burnett’s own creative and entrepreneurial spirit, as well as her insistence that she will do her art her own way.  Local antique dealer Jay Kilby has loaned several pieces from his collection to embellish the exhibition space and allow Burnett’s images to come off the wall.

Burnett calls the style of her work a naïve type of folk art.  She works in a variety of mediums that include both drawings and paintings in a mixed palette of pen and ink, watercolor, marker, acrylic and pastel.  Much of her work celebrates the nostalgia of the country landscape, family life or women’s fashions.

Burnett says that she was always drawing as a child, and at age 16, she enrolled in a mail instruction course from the Art Institute of Chicago.  Unfortunately, the academic structure of the correspondence class did allow for the individualism of her vision or style.  At the age of 60, and after many years of running local antique shops, Burnett decided to return to painting.  In 2007 Burnett was commissioned to paint a 40 foot mural as a centerpiece of the antique shops on North Bridge Street in Bedford.  The murals are of Rainbow Row in Charlestown SC, as well as local historic spots around Bedford County.   Burnett has also exhibited her work at local festivals, the Bower Center for the Arts and Art on Depo in Bedford and the Shops at Ashwood in Forest.

Goose Creek Studio Gallery and Custom Framing, located at 302 Court Street in Bedford, is open Tuesday through Friday, 10am-5pm and Saturday, 10am-2pm. Carol Burnett’s paintings will be on view through the end of March.  For more information call (540) 586-8482 or see www.goosecreekstudio.com.
