Bedford Public Libraries
The Bedford Central Library, more than 100 years old, is the oldest
publicly-supported, continuously operating public library in any of the
communities surrounding Bedford County, and is one of Virginia
’s oldest public libraries. From the beginning, the library attracted remarkable patronage from the progressive community it
serves.
In addition to the Central Library, the library system has five county libraries, all of which opened in 1999. The Central Library has an extensive circulating
collection and serves as a reference
resource for the rest of the library system, having the only public service desk
dedicated to reference and a more comprehensive reference collection. Bedford
Central also houses interlibrary loan and outreach services to special
populations.
The library is also proud of its unique internet request system for books
created by Donna Pletcher, which is not found in any other library system in
the U.S. The system collections emphasize standard works in major fields, basic
reference materials, general periodicals, a current circulating collection and
an appropriate children
’s collection. The Internet, with its unprecedented access to the world of
information and ideas, is an essential tool for the system
’s patrons. The system also has one bookmobile.
