Government Affairs Committee Goals:
- Identify issues, interests and concerns as they relate to Local, State and Federal governments
- Stay abreast of progress on issues of concern throughout the legislative session and report progress to the Chamber Board.
- Improve committee accessibility and visibility throughout the area
- Address other matters of local interest as they arise
Objectives:
Projects & Tasks:
- Submit the initial 2010 BACC Legislative Position Paper for Board approval on September 15th
- Beginning in September, monitor the state budget process and pre-filed legislation presented to local Delegates and Senators.
- Prepare draft recommendation for the Chamber Board of Directors to send to elected representatives.
- Update BACC Legislative Position Paper as necessary
- Prepare preemptive strategies through elected representatives to preserve a healthy regulatory business climate
- Schedule meetings in at least two other Bedford areas during 2009
- Schedule June meeting in Forest
- Schedule September meeting at Smith Mountain Lake
- Monitor Bedford County's Zoning Ordinance Revision, and advise the Board and Chamber members on issues of concern
- Ask Bedford County to present an educational overview of new Zoning Ordinance from a small to mid-sized business perspective by April 1st 2009. Invitation to this session is limited to Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce (“BACC”) Board of Directors (“BOD”) and Government Affairs Committee (“GAC”) members.
- Meet, develop and approve recommendations for Bedford County Zoning Ordinance, then present to BACC BOD for consideration and approval by April 8th
- Update BACC Legislative Position Paper as necessary

- Organize Wrap-up of Virginia legislative matters after session ends in April
- Schedule Legislative Wrap-up Breakfast to discuss outcomes of 2009 General Assembly session.
